Defense bails out No. 24 Sooners in a 14-6 win over New Mexico
vs. New Mexico · Mon, Sep 21, 2026 · Record after: 2-1 (0-0 SEC)
No. 24 Oklahoma held off New Mexico 14-6 on a 95-degree night at Memorial Stadium, and the final margin was the defense's. John Mateer threw a 29-yard touchdown to Hayden Hansen and a 53-yarder to Isaiah Sategna III, then spent the night living with two interceptions, a muffed punt, and 61 rushing yards. Six sacks and a fourth-and-1 stop kept the Lobos to two field goals in front of 83,423. The AP poll dropped the Sooners out of the Top 25 the next day.
QB Watch
Mateer finished 19 of 25 for 238 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, plus 10 carries for 17 yards. The efficiency was real — 9.5 yards per attempt and a 166.4 passer rating — and so were the giveaways. The opening series ended on third-and-8 when Tavian Combs intercepted him at the OU 37, hurried by Xavier Slayton. The second pick came late in the half: Frankie Edwards jumped a third-and-7 throw at the OU 33 and returned it 11 yards to the 22, which became New Mexico's second field goal and a 7-6 game. Between those mistakes he ran the 12-play, 80-yard drive that Hansen finished from 29, then hit Sategna in stride for 53 on the first scoring march of the second half. The legs that usually bail out a messy passing night did not: a long rush of 7 yards. NCAA passer rating: 166.4.

Offense Report
Ben Arbuckle's unit totaled 299 yards (238 pass, 61 rush) on 58 plays — 5.2 per snap — and converted 7 of 15 third downs. The air game carried it. Sategna caught six passes for 101 yards and the 53-yard score; Hansen added three catches for 49 yards and the 29-yard touchdown; Rocky Beers chipped in two grabs for 34 yards, long of 22. The ground game did not. Thirty-two carries produced 61 yards, 1.9 a rush, and a long of 9 by Xavier Robinson. Lloyd Avant led the committee with eight carries for 27. Oklahoma never reached the red zone — both touchdowns came from outside the 20 — and an 11-play, 51-yard march to the New Mexico 23 died on Tate Sandell's missed 41-yard field goal at the half. Time of possession: 25:52. Penalties: 7 for 50 yards.

Defense Report
This is the win. Venables' group held a Lobos offense that had been putting up points to 185 yards, 12 first downs, and 3 of 14 on third down. New Mexico rushed 38 times for 69 yards. Oklahoma sacked the quarterback six times for 46 yards: Adepoju Adebawore had 1.5, and David Stone, Owen Heinecke, Peyton Bowen, Reggie Powers III, and Jacobe Johnson each recorded at least a half. Stone and Heinecke led the tackle chart with eight apiece. Peyton Bowen added a sack and two pass breakups. The Lobos' one explosive, a 40-yard catch by Cade Keith, became a field goal. Their last real chance was a 12-play, 47-yard march in the fourth quarter; Stone stuffed Scottre Humphrey on fourth-and-1 at the Oklahoma 17 with 2:58 left, and the Sooners converted a third down and kneeled it out. Three first-half takeaways produced six points. Brent Venables called the turnovers incredible and said the defense saved them.

The return game gave one back: Sategna muffed a punt at the OU 41, Eric McClain recovered at the 39, and New Mexico went three plays for minus-1 and punted. Sategna also brought back two kickoffs for 32 yards, long of 18. Attendance was 83,423. Kickoff was 6:35 p.m., and it was 95 degrees at Norman.

What's Next
The 2-1 Sooners open SEC play at No. 2 Georgia on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 2:30 p.m. CT at Sanford Stadium on ESPN. Sunday's AP poll moved Oklahoma out of the Top 25 after a 14-point home win. Athens is the correction or the confirmation: six sacks can travel, and an offense that managed 61 rushing yards, two interceptions, and a missed field goal cannot look like this against Georgia. Boomer Ball will publish the next Monday Morning Quarterback after Athens.
